Ancient Egyptian Dictionary – Bastet, Part 2: People and Questions

Bastet Dictionary cover: the title “Bastet Dictionary to the Egyptian Language” in Arabic and English, divided by an ankh sign, on a papyrus-coloured background

This is the second part of the Bastet Dictionary. Part 1 collected words and short expressions; this part moves on to whole sentences taken from ancient Egyptian texts.

Each row gives the sentence in transliteration and hieroglyphs, with an English translation. Open Source under a row to see where it comes from. Where the original sentence contained a name or a long phrase, it is replaced here by (...) so that the pattern can be reused, and the original sentence is written in the source note.

The sentences are quoted from the cited sources (mainly Allen’s Middle Egyptian and the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae, TLA). The hieroglyphs are a teaching spelling built word by word from standard dictionary writings; they are not a copy of the ancient writing. The last section is a practice passage from a literary text, made up mostly of words you have already met.

6. Practice: the Dialogue of a Man with His Ba

The Dialogue of a Man with His Ba is a Middle Kingdom text in which a man talks with his ba, a part of his own being usually translated “soul”. The lines below come from different places in the dialogue, in the order in which they occur; the line numbers are in the source notes. Most of the words have appeared in Part 1 or in the sections above, and the few new ones are listed below, so try reading the Egyptian before looking at the English. Another passage of the same text is in the Harper’s Songs article.
